About This SiteIf you are genetically male, you act like a man because you are one. You do not need to be trained to act like a man, or 'initiated' into male mysteries or to join a male 'empowerment' group. You know, deeper than your bones, what it is to be a man. Current society doesn't think that it is good to be a man. I do. I'll say that with a little more nuance: current society thinks that male attributes are counter productive at best, and should be bred out of the species at worst. I disagree. I'm no expert, but ever since I read Iron John, many years ago, I've been trying to articulate my inchoate sense that Bly was missing the point somehow. There is something wrong, something very wrong, with a society that doesn't value men. I think that is much of what the "men's movement(s)" have been reacting against. But I also think they're confused about the problem. We don't need empowerment, there has been no "decline of men", we are still on top. Instead we need to celebrate masculinity. Men are not merely necessary, but contribute to the human experience in vital ways that women, by themselves, by their very genetics, cannot duplicate. In addition, we need to begin a productive discussion on what constitutes civilized masculine behavior. Too often, civilized behavior is equated with behaving like a women. I'm not against women or against feminism. That would be overreaction and stupid besides. I'm also not talking about a return to primitive chest thumping masculinity either; men and masculinity have a place in civilized society and that is what I celebrate. You are welcome, man or woman, to join me. Participate in discussions here, share what I talk about with others and celebrate what men bring to the table. It's more than just meat from the hunt. This site is narrowly focused on masculinity. I have a website with a wider focus at ttscp.com if you are interested. |
